update...
well... i'm now at least getting past the grey screen of death, seeing the apple logo, and actually now getting a blue desktop, but there it sits. who knows if i'll be able to duplicate this again, or get it booted well enough to suck down the files to back them up.
i think the disk might be fried. in which case, i have a spare i could replace it with, IF i can get the files backed up.
god this is making me crazy.

I hate to break it to you, but that's exactly what my iBook did a few months ago. Grey to maybe apple to a rare occurence of blue. Diagnosis: hard drive death. The moment (if) you get it booted up into the finder, don't run anything. Instead, hook up a firewire drive and suck everything you can off it before it locks up again. I was able to get about 90% of the stuff of my HD before it locked up once more, never to spin again.
Thank Zod for AppleCare. They had it back in 3 days.

One other thing - let it sit for a few hours in between attempts to boot it up. For some reason, it seemed to help mine. Maybe it cools down or something, allowing the drive to spin up easier?
